Osprey

Pandion haliaetus

Osprey is a large raptor with a distinctive dark eye stripe, white underparts, and patterned brown upperparts. For identification, habitat, and natural-history details, see the Pandion haliaetus species page.

For identification details and comparison with similar species, see the Pandion haliaetus page in the Field Notes section.

Photographic Sequence

Our first walk from the Minnregs Lake Trailhead was intended primarily to see how the trail connected with another route through Murphy-Hanrehan Park. An Osprey circling over the lake was unexpected, and the camera was not ready when the bird suddenly plunged toward the water. By the time I raised the camera, it had already emerged.

Farther along the trail, we found an Osprey nest with a second bird present. The bird from the lake had successfully caught a fish and settled on a nearby feeding perch, while the second Osprey left the nest. After finishing its meal, the first bird moved from the feeding perch back toward the nest.

The photographs below document that encounter from the initial flight over the lake through the hunting sequence, feeding, and close views at the nest. Some of the transitional photographs are softer than the strongest portraits, but they preserve behavior that would otherwise be missing from the sequence.

The plunge itself happened before I could bring the camera into position. E22A9601 begins the photographic record just after the bird had emerged from the lake. Although no prey is clearly visible in this frame, the successful hunt became apparent farther down the trail.

The Osprey returned with a fish and began feeding on a wooden perch near the nest. A second Osprey, which had been occupying the nest when we arrived, took flight as the first bird settled with its catch. The photographs do not establish the sex or breeding role of either bird, so the two are left unidentified beyond their presence together at the nest site.

From Feeding Perch to Nest

After finishing the fish, the Osprey became active on the feeding perch before moving back toward the nest. These photographs were made with the 1.4× extender. The additional reach helped record the behavior, although fine feather detail is softer than in the strongest photographs from the encounter.

Photographic Notes

The first photographs were made with little preparation because the Osprey appeared unexpectedly while we were exploring the trail. The actual plunge into the lake was missed, but E22A9601 records the bird immediately after it emerged from the water.

The 1.4× extender was used for the sequence between the feeding perch and the nest. Those photographs preserve an excellent display of wing, tail, and foot positions, although they are somewhat softer than the strongest nest portraits.

E22A9761 was the most usable photograph from the 2× extender series. The additional magnification produced a larger image of the bird, but with a noticeable loss of fine detail. For this encounter, the additional reach was generally less valuable than the image quality retained with less magnification.

The nest provided the closest and most detailed views of the day. The strong head pattern, hooked bill, yellow eye, white underparts, dark upperparts, and barred tail are all visible across the final photographs.

E22A9971 provides the clearest conventional profile, while E22A9972 adds expression and behavior with the open bill. Together with the earlier hunting and feeding photographs, they turn an unplanned encounter into a record of several aspects of Osprey behavior within a single visit.
