Lichens as Miniature Landscapes

Hooded Sunburst (Xanthomendoza fallax) dominates this weathered patch of elm bark with broad orange lobes, while much smaller colonies of Candleflame (Candelaria concolor) scatter brilliant yellow granules through the surrounding fissures. Above the sunburst, Mealy Shadow (Phaeophyscia orbicularis) spreads gray-green lobes edged with dark cilia. To the right, the heavily pruinose apothecia and pale maculate lobes suggest Hoary Rosette (Physcia aipolia). Together these species illustrate how several distinct lichens coexist within only a few square centimeters of bark, each exploiting slightly different textures, moisture, and light.

At first glance, this small patch of lichen reads as a bright yellow-green cushion on bark, but the scale tells the better story. The entire thallus is only about 0.70” [18 mm] wide, while a typical apothecium measures roughly 0.020” [0.5 mm] across. In close view, those tiny fruiting disks crowd the lobed surface like miniature suns, giving the colony its sunburst character and pointing toward Pin-cushion Sunburst Lichen.
