Butterfly Milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) is a native perennial milkweed recognized by its brilliant orange flower clusters, narrow leaves, hairy stems, and preference for sunny, comparatively dry habitats.
It is also commonly called Butterfly Weed.

Description
Asclepias tuberosa is recognized by:
- Growth form: herbaceous perennial, commonly about 1 to 2½ feet tall
- Flowers: dense clusters of vivid orange to yellow-orange flowers
- Flower structure: individual flowers have five reflexed petals beneath the characteristic milkweed crown of hoods and horns
- Leaves: simple, narrow to lance-shaped, toothless, and mostly alternate along the stem
- Surface: stems and leaves are often noticeably hairy
- Stems: upright to branching, sometimes giving mature plants a somewhat bushy form
- Sap: unlike many familiar milkweeds, the stems generally do not produce conspicuous milky latex when broken
- Fruit: narrow spindle-shaped pods containing brown seeds attached to silky hairs for wind dispersal
The combination of bright orange flowers and narrow leaves makes Butterfly Milkweed one of the most immediately recognizable members of Asclepias in Minnesota.
Habitat
Butterfly Milkweed favors open, sunny sites with comparatively dry, well-drained soil.
Typical habitats include:
- Dry prairies
- Open fields
- Roadsides and trail edges
- Sandy or rocky ground
- Open woodland and savanna edges
- Prairie restorations and native plantings
Its strong taproot helps established plants persist through dry summer conditions.
Identification
The orange flower color is the quickest field clue, but leaf arrangement, habitat, and overall structure provide useful confirmation.
Butterfly Milkweed — Asclepias tuberosa
Bright orange to yellow-orange flowers; narrow, mostly alternate leaves; hairy stems; usually associated with dry, sunny sites.
Common Milkweed — Asclepias syriaca
Usually taller, with broad opposite leaves and rounded clusters of pale pink to mauve flowers. Common Milkweed readily produces the milky sap normally associated with the genus.
Swamp Milkweed — Asclepias incarnata
Usually has pink to rose-colored flowers and long narrow leaves, but favors moist soils, wetlands, pond margins, and wet ditches rather than the dry habitat typical of Butterfly Milkweed.
Habitat can therefore be almost as useful as flower color when separating these species in the field.
Ecology
Butterfly Milkweed has a particularly direct connection with butterflies.
The flowers provide nectar for Monarchs and many other insects. Like other native milkweeds, the plant can also serve as a larval host for Monarch caterpillars, which feed on milkweed foliage during development.
Those are two different relationships: an adult Monarch visiting the flowers for nectar does not necessarily indicate that eggs or caterpillars are present on the same plant.
The dense flower clusters also attract bees and other pollinating insects, making a blooming plant a useful place to watch for small visitors that may not be obvious at first glance.
Notes from the Photos
The Gallery photographs show two complementary aspects of Asclepias tuberosa.
E22A8928 is the clearest botanical view. The orange flower cluster, narrow leaves, branching stem, and surrounding meadow vegetation remain visible together, making it the most useful image for identification and habitat context.
E22A8904 moves into the flower cluster as a Monarch feeds. At this distance, the individual milkweed flowers become more apparent and the photograph records the adult butterfly using the plant as a nectar source.
E22A8919 provides the strongest combined view of plant and visitor. The Monarch’s open wings dominate the frame, but the orange flower cluster remains visible beneath it, tying the butterfly directly to the plant.
Together, the photographs move from identification toward ecological context without requiring a long Gallery page.
