American Bittersweet (Celastrus scandens) is a native perennial woody vine recognized most readily in late autumn, when its orange capsules split into three curling sections and expose bright red arils.

The terminal fruit clusters are among the best field marks. After the leaves have fallen, the orange capsule walls and red arils remain conspicuous against gray stems and the subdued colors of the late-autumn landscape.


Soil and Habitat

American Bittersweet grows along woodland edges, in thickets, fields, prairie margins, fence lines, roadsides, and other sunny to partly shaded openings. It often uses shrubs and small trees for support, winding around their branches rather than climbing with tendrils.

The photographed plants were found in several parts of a Minnesota park. The strongest recent vine appeared beside a road at the edge of a pond, where open light and surrounding woody growth provided both exposure and support.


Similar Species

The most important comparison is Round Leaf Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus), also widely known as Oriental Bittersweet. It is a nonnative invasive woody vine that can overwhelm shrubs and trees.

The two species are most reliably separated by a combination of fruit color and placement:

The yellow structures on Round Leaf Bittersweet are the outer fruit capsules, not flower petals. Its flowers are small and generally greenish. Leaf shape is variable in both species and should not be used as the only identifying feature.

Round Leaf Bittersweet was introduced to North America as an ornamental during the nineteenth century and has spread widely through the eastern United States and Great Lakes region. In Minnesota, it is listed as a prohibited-control noxious weed.

The vines photographed here appear consistent with Celastrus scandens: the capsules are distinctly orange, and the fruit is concentrated in terminal clusters rather than distributed repeatedly along the stems.


Ecological Notes

The fruit persists into late autumn and winter, adding conspicuous color after most leaves have fallen. Birds and other wildlife may feed on the fleshy red arils and disperse the seeds.

American Bittersweet can form substantial woody vines, but it is generally less aggressive than invasive Round Leaf Bittersweet. The native species may also be displaced where the invasive vine becomes established, making careful identification important before vines are planted, collected, or removed.


Field Observations

I first noticed American Bittersweet because of its extraordinary late-autumn color. Against the subdued browns and grays of the park, the fruit capsules appeared almost hunter orange, opening to expose deep red arils within.

At first, I knew of only two patches—one along the north side of the park and another in the southern portion. Both returned the following year. Later, a third vine appeared in a different part of the park and seemed to thrive, even as the original two patches disappeared.

The vine shown in the focus-stacked photograph appeared last year beside the road at the edge of the pond. It is the heartiest example I have found so far, winding tightly through the surrounding branches and carrying several clusters of fruit.

Seen closely, the opened capsules have a peculiar, animated quality. Their curled orange lobes and protruding red centers remind me a little of the man-eating plant from Little Shop of Horrors—strange, theatrical forms emerging from an otherwise quiet tangle of late-season vines.
